Mario Hezonja's departure from Real Madrid is shaping up to be one of the summer's biggest sports dramas, according to Spanish media. The Croatian forward, who impressed in the EuroLeague and against Israel's national team, paid a one million euro buyout to become a free agent. However, complications have arisen as he has not yet officially paid the release clause required by Real Madrid to finalize his exit. Although Hezonja informed the club of his intention to activate his NBA exit clause, he has not presented a formal NBA offer nor completed the payment, which under Spanish league rules must accompany the notification.

Real Madrid now holds a strong negotiating position, as the release clause remains unpaid. The club could demand a higher fee or, based on regulations, retain Hezonja despite his desire to leave. This uncertainty has led Madrid to sign Mikael Jantunen and consider matching Valencia's offer to bring back Eli Ndiaye, signaling they are moving on without Hezonja.

Hezonja delayed announcing his departure amid a lack of NBA offers meeting his professional and financial expectations. Journalist Marc Stein reported interest from several NBA teams, but only on non-guaranteed contracts. If Hezonja fails to secure a stable NBA position, he may return to Europe, potentially joining another EuroLeague team. His contract with Madrid only includes an NBA exit clause, but if that fails, he will be free to sign elsewhere. Notably, wealthy clubs from Dubai and Olympiacos are reportedly closely monitoring the situation and eager to sign him.
