Rare 'Happy Heart Syndrome' Hospitalizes Mother After Daughter's Wedding

The story · English

A rare medical case reported in Oxford Medical Case Reports details how a 65-year-old mother was hospitalized with severe symptoms resembling a heart attack just days after her daughter's wedding. The woman experienced intense chest pain and shortness of breath three days post-wedding, leading to an emergency hospital admission. Initial tests suggested a sudden heart attack caused by a blockage in a major artery, but further examinations, including an MRI, revealed no arterial blockage. Instead, doctors diagnosed her with a rare form of Takotsubo syndrome known as "happy heart syndrome," triggered by a strong positive emotional event such as her daughter's wedding. This condition causes temporary weakening and swelling of the left ventricle due to a sudden surge of stress hormones like adrenaline. While the more common "broken heart syndrome" is linked to negative emotional stress, the "happy heart syndrome" accounts for only about 4.1% of Takotsubo cases. Fortunately, with prompt medical treatment, the condition is fully reversible. The patient recovered completely and was discharged, now looking forward to more joyful family occasions. First identified in Japan in 1983, Takotsubo syndrome is often underdiagnosed due to its clinical similarity to acute coronary syndrome and typical heart attacks. Medical experts stress the importance of high clinical suspicion even in patients without classic cardiac risk factors to ensure timely diagnosis and supportive care.
