The European Union has postponed the launch of its electronic travel authorization system (ETIAS) from late 2026 to 2027. This delay is attributed to instability and long queues caused by the new biometric passport stamping system introduced at European airports in April 2026. The biometric system, which replaces manual passport stamping with fingerprint and facial scans, has led to significant delays at major airports and ports across Europe.

ETIAS is a pre-travel electronic visa waiver required for citizens of visa-exempt countries, including Israel, before entering 30 European countries. The EU agency eu-LISA, responsible for managing security, border, and migration information systems, acknowledged internally that meeting the original timeline was unrealistic and updated the official ETIAS website accordingly. Since ETIAS depends on the smooth operation of the biometric passport system, authorities have granted additional time for border and airline operators to adapt.

For Israeli travelers, this postponement means they can continue to enter Europe during the 2026 Jewish High Holidays and New Year's Eve without additional bureaucratic hurdles beyond a valid Israeli passport. Once implemented, ETIAS will charge a fee of 20 euros per person, with exemptions for children under 18 and seniors over 70. The system requires travelers to hold biometric passports, but over one million Israelis still possess only regular passports. ETIAS will also require declarations of short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period in the participating countries.

Dual Israeli-European citizens will remain exempt from ETIAS if they enter Europe using their European passports. The official ETIAS rollout is scheduled for early 2027, followed by a six-month transition period during which registration is recommended but not mandatory. Full enforcement is expected to begin by mid-2027.
