IDF Soldiers at Southern Gaza Outpost Complain of Rat Infestation and Poor Conditions

The story · English

Soldiers and security drivers stationed at the "MOP-South" outpost in the southern Gaza Brigade of the IDF's Gaza Division have long complained about severe sanitation and logistical issues to senior commanders, but report no improvements. According to the soldiers, beyond the extreme strain of their rotating shifts (eight hours on patrol, eight hours rest, eight hours on patrol, and sixteen hours rest), they endure what they describe as "inhumane and degrading" conditions. One soldier detailed a severe infestation of rats and mice attacking soldiers in sleeping quarters, kitchens, and seating areas. Despite commanders being fully aware of the situation, soldiers say their concerns are ignored, including a lack of water for patrols.

The outpost, which suffered a heavy attack on October 7, also faces structural problems such as a perimeter fence made of wooden poles collected locally, broken floor tiles, and inadequate shower and toilet facilities causing overcrowding and long queues. These issues have reportedly persisted for years without resolution by the Gaza Division and Southern Command, leading to frustration and a sense of neglect among troops.

An official IDF source stated that the food provided to soldiers is clean and of good quality and that a recent commanders' inspection found no unusual problems at the outpost. The IDF Spokesperson has not yet responded to these complaints. Meanwhile, the IDF and Shin Bet recently eliminated the commander of Hamas's "Yabna" battalion in the Rafah Brigade.
