  • Israeli study shows Viagra limits cancer cells' cholesterol access, slowing metastasis.
  • Lab tests on mice and human cells confirmed Viagra's effect on cancer spread.
  • Analysis of medical records showed better survival in cancer patients who took Viagra pre-diagnosis.
  • Researchers call for more clinical trials before using Viagra in cancer treatment.
  • Professor Ayelet Erez leads the study at the Weizmann Institute.
  • Dr. Samah Haikh from Clalit reported improved survival linked to Viagra use.

A new Israeli study led by Professor Ayelet Erez from the Weizmann Institute suggests that Viagra, widely known for treating erectile dysfunction, may have significant potential in fighting cancer metastasis. The research reveals that Viagra restricts cancer cells' access to cholesterol, which they need to spread and form metastases, thereby slowing disease progression. The findings were demonstrated in laboratory settings using mouse models and human cancer cell cultures.

To validate these results in real-world scenarios, the researchers analyzed medical records of tens of thousands of cancer patients, comparing those who had taken Viagra for routine reasons with those who had not. Dr. Samah Haikh from Clalit Health Services' innovation division reported that patients who used Viagra in the six months prior to their cancer diagnosis showed better survival rates.

Despite these promising findings, the researchers emphasize the need for further clinical trials before Viagra can be officially incorporated into cancer treatment protocols. Professor Erez expressed optimism about the drug's potential but noted that extensive prospective clinical testing is required to confirm its effectiveness in improving cancer patient survival.
