The story · English

Judit Polgar, the renowned Jewish-Hungarian chess grandmaster, has declined an unexpected offer from Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Medgyessy to become the country's president. The 50-year-old chess icon, known for her strong support of Israel, was proposed to lead Hungary as part of Medgyessy's efforts to reshape the nation's leadership following his recent parliamentary supermajority win. Polgar would have been the first president from the sports world and one of the most prominent Jewish figures to hold the office.

Polgar explained her refusal by stating she does not feel strong enough to bear the heavy responsibility, particularly in uniting a deeply divided nation. Her decision was also influenced by harsh and sometimes antisemitic backlash she received on social media. Medgyessy expressed disappointment but respected her choice, acknowledging responsibility for any communication errors that may have affected her decision.

The outgoing president, Tamás Sólyom, a Viktor Orbán ally, was removed following a constitutional amendment, part of Medgyessy's broader campaign to remove Orbán's influence after 16 years in power. Medgyessy praised Polgar as a unifying figure Hungary needs and described the presidency as the highest form of public service. With Polgar's refusal, Medgyessy is expected to seek another candidate as his government continues its leadership reforms.
