Hungarian PM Offers Chess Champion Judit Polgar Presidency of Hungary

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar is set to meet with Jewish-Hungarian chess grandmaster Judit Polgár to propose her appointment as Hungary's president. Magyar described the offer as a "great honor" and emphasized that the country needs unity, peace, and a president who can make every Hungarian proud. He stated that the presidency is not merely a job but the highest form of service to represent all citizens.

Magyar praised Polgár's extraordinary achievements, noting her 26-year reign as the top-ranked female chess player, her historic entry into the world's top ten players, five Chess Olympiad victories, and honors such as Hungary's Order of Saint Stephen and membership at Cambridge University's Christ's College. He highlighted that her reputation stems from her talent, diligence, perseverance, and integrity rather than political connections.

Born in Budapest, Polgár is one of the most prominent figures in chess history. Her family emigrated to Israel, and reports indicate she holds Israeli citizenship. It remains unclear whether she will accept Magyar's offer to run for the presidency, which is expected to be interim until a new constitution is adopted.

The meeting and proposal come amid calls for national unity and peace in Hungary, with the prime minister underscoring the symbolic and unifying role of the presidency.
