Zoharan Mamdani, the mayor of a New York locality, sparked controversy by threatening to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits New York for events such as the UN assembly. Following this threat, local parliament member Simcha Eichenstein formally requested the New York State Attorney General, Letitia James, to open an official investigation into Mamdani for alleged misconduct and abuse of power.

Eichenstein's letter emphasized that New York law explicitly prohibits a mayor from ordering the arrest of a specific individual and that public officials cannot leverage their authority to direct law enforcement actions based on personal or political views. He also noted that the United States does not recognize the International Criminal Court, which issued an arrest warrant against Netanyahu, and therefore Mamdani cannot use this warrant as a legal basis for arrest.

Mamdani, 34, had claimed that Netanyahu "belongs to The Hague" and that he is engaged in "active discussions" regarding his arrest during Netanyahu's visit to Manhattan. He accused Netanyahu of orchestrating a genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Despite his statements, Mamdani, a social-democratic mayor, affirmed his commitment to comply with U.S. laws and reiterated that his administration would operate within all relevant local legal frameworks.

U.S. President Donald Trump responded to the situation by assuring that Netanyahu "will not be arrested under any circumstances." Trump, who is running for re-election, expressed support for Netanyahu and dismissed the possibility of a local official acting contrary to international law and U.S. policy.
