Hamas has officially announced Khalil al-Hayya as the new leader of the movement, succeeding Yahya Sinwar. Al-Hayya won the leadership vote held in the Gaza Strip with a decisive 13 to 1 margin against Khaled Meshaal. Yahya Sinwar had served as leader following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in July 2024. Since Sinwar's own assassination, Khalil al-Hayya acted as the de facto leader before his formal appointment.
