Energy Minister Eli Cohen Criticizes Some Recent Legislation as Unnecessary
Energy Minister and Cabinet member Eli Cohen from the Likud party expressed criticism of certain laws passed last week, including the Basic Law on Torah Study, calling some of them unnecessary. Speaking on Kan 11's "Midday" program, Cohen acknowledged Israel as a Jewish state and the importance of Torah study but argued that the legislation did not provide any effective or operational benefit to the ultra-Orthodox community. He described the law as "superficial and unnecessary" and emphasized the need to prioritize support for those serving in the regular army and reserves.
Regarding the recent drop in polls, Cohen expressed confidence that Likud will win upcoming elections but cautioned against complacency. He also addressed internal party dynamics, stating he trusts Likud members to make the right choices in primaries and noted that Prime Minister Netanyahu secured a significant number of reserved spots on the party list. Cohen expects Netanyahu to appoint high-quality candidates.
On security matters, Cohen highlighted an upcoming security consultation led by Netanyahu amid escalating tensions between Iran and the United States. He warned Iran against attacking Israel, stating any such action would provoke a strong response. When asked about the possibility of canceling Likud primaries due to the security situation, Cohen said the party must be prepared for all scenarios but did not speculate on the likelihood.
Cohen also commented on U.S. President Donald Trump's restrictions on Israeli military actions, recalling that Israel acted independently during recent Lebanese border incidents despite Washington's calls for restraint. He affirmed the strong U.S.-Israel alliance and vowed Israel would respond decisively if Iran resumes nuclear or ballistic missile programs, with or without an agreement.
Additionally, Cohen referenced a recent controversial statement by Netanyahu to Rabbi Lando, defending Israeli soldiers' valor. Meanwhile, a Kan news poll indicated that candidates Trooper and Handel are surpassing the electoral threshold.
