On Sunday, the Israeli Supreme Court issued a temporary injunction halting the implementation of certain provisions of the new Communications Law approved by the Knesset last Thursday. Justice Ofer Groskopf ruled that the petitions against the law raise "serious claims" regarding both the legislative process and specific regulatory measures within the law. The court expressed concern that immediate enforcement could cause irreversible effects on the communications market ahead of the upcoming elections, making it difficult to reverse changes later. However, the injunction does not freeze the entire law, only those sections set to take effect immediately upon publication.

The Communications Law, championed by Minister Shlomo Karhi, establishes a new Broadcast Communications Authority to unify existing regulatory bodies and mandates major Israeli content providers to register in a dedicated registry. It also reforms sports broadcasting by requiring broadcasters to progressively invest in original Israeli productions. The law passed narrowly with 53 votes in favor and 48 against amid fierce opposition, especially from ultra-Orthodox factions.

Following the law's approval, three petitions were filed with the Supreme Court demanding its cancellation and suspension. The petitions, submitted by the Yesh Atid party and the Movement for Quality Government, accused the outgoing government of rushing the legislation and creating a politically influenced regulator that undermines media independence. The temporary injunction will remain until the court issues a final ruling on the interim relief requests, with all respondents ordered to submit responses by next Sunday.

Minister Karhi responded on social media, rejecting the court's authority to suspend laws and accusing the Supreme Court of overreach and disrespecting the Knesset and the Israeli public. He vowed not to participate in proceedings he views as biased and called for parliamentary action against the court's decision. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir also condemned the ruling, labeling the judges "dictators in black robes" and promising that the next right-wing government will overhaul the judiciary and end what he called the "deep state" control.

The legal and political battle over the Communications Law highlights tensions between Israel's judiciary and the outgoing government ahead of the September elections, with significant implications for media regulation and democratic governance.
