Jerusalem Conference Bridges Medical and Halachic Guidance for Epilepsy in Ultra-Orthodox Community
A unique conference held in Jerusalem brought together leading rabbis, halachic decisors, and medical experts to address epilepsy challenges within the ultra-Orthodox community. Organized by the Kamnu VeNithoded association in collaboration with Clalit Health Services, the event focused on integrating Torah perspectives with up-to-date medical knowledge to support epilepsy patients and their families.
The conference opened with remarks from Rabbi Israel Reis, chairman of Kamnu VeNithoded, who outlined the organization's comprehensive support including emotional and medical counseling, rights advocacy, and tailored halachic guidance. Rabbi Shmuel Yosef Stitzberg, a prominent rabbi and halachic authority from Beit Shemesh, moderated discussions on matchmaking, fasting, and medication use for epilepsy patients.
Experts presented key findings, including Rabbi Mordechai Shoimer from Bnei Olam, who reviewed genetic inheritance data indicating a low risk of epilepsy transmission to offspring. Dr. Mark Midovdovsky, senior neurologist and EEG department head at Hadassah Hospital, provided an overview of epilepsy treatments, side effects, and the importance of proper medication management.
A significant portion of the conference addressed matchmaking concerns and genetic implications, emphasizing early medical testing years before marriage to facilitate informed and calm decision-making. The group also reached practical conclusions on managing epilepsy medications during fast days such as Yom Kippur, balancing health needs with halachic requirements.
Rabbi Moshe Rozengarten, head of Clalit’s Jerusalem ultra-Orthodox sector, highlighted the importance of collaboration between medical professionals and rabbis to improve healthcare accessibility and confidence. Rabbi Avraham Konski, director of Clalit’s ultra-Orthodox department, reaffirmed Clalit’s commitment to providing advanced, reliable medical information that respects religious lifestyles and supports patient decision-making.
