Medical and Halachic Conference Bridges Gap Between Doctors and Rabbis

Dozens of rabbis, judges, and rabbinical authorities representing all communities and factions in Beit Shemesh convened for a halachic-medical conference organized by the Yad HaRambam Institute in cooperation with the Meuhedet health fund. The event, held annually for the past twelve years in memory of Rabbi Moshe Halberstam, aims to bridge the gap between medical knowledge and Jewish law.

Leading Israeli physicians presented on current medical topics and technological advancements to educate the rabbis on matters relevant to their halachic rulings. Practical halachic decisions were also issued by rabbinical authorities on the discussed issues. The conference, held this year in anticipation of the Yom Kippur fast, featured lectures by prominent doctors, including Professor David Shweiki from Hadassah, who presented research on fasting for pregnant women, and Professor Doron Kabbiri, who discussed high-risk pregnancies. Professor Alon Hershko, known as the personal physician to many leading rabbis, lectured on potential complications during fasting and engaged in a dialogue with the rabbis.

Rabbi Matisyahu Deitsch, president of the Yad HaRambam Institute, emphasized the importance of continuous dialogue between rabbis and doctors, stating that Meuhedet is highly aware of the necessity of this connection and actively encourages it. He noted that the conference honors the memory of his father-in-law, Rabbi Moshe Halberstam, a renowned halachic decisor who championed the integration of medicine and Jewish law. Representatives from Meuhedet, including Jerusalem District Manager Ofer Mesulam and Haredi Sector Manager Rabbi Moshe Baram, highlighted the health fund's commitment to serving the Beit Shemesh community and fostering interdisciplinary dialogue.

Rabbi Natan Kofshitz, the Chief Rabbi of Beit Shemesh, and Rabbi Shmuel Brandsdorfer, a member of the Badatz of the Eidah HaChareidis, spoke about adhering to tradition and the rulings of previous authorities. They praised the collaborative efforts of Meuhedet and the Yad HaRambam Institute. The conference concluded with thanks to the organizers and the distribution of the book "Ratz K'Tzvi" by Rabbi Tzvi Reisman.
