BMW iX3 Electric Crossover Delivers Strong Performance and Range with Premium Features
BMW has launched the new iX3 electric crossover, positioning it as a significant step forward for the brand’s electric lineup. The iX3 features a cutting-edge 800-volt platform with a large 108 kWh battery, promising an official range of up to 800 kilometers, though real-world testing in Israel showed a more realistic range between 575 and 690 kilometers depending on driving speed. The tested M-Sport Extreme version, priced at 545,000 shekels, boasts dual electric motors producing 469 horsepower and 65.7 kgm of torque, enabling a 0-100 km/h acceleration in 4.9 seconds and all-wheel drive.
Design-wise, the iX3 is longer and lower than its predecessor, with a clean and aerodynamic silhouette highlighted by modestly sized kidney grilles and 22-inch sporty wheels that slightly compromise urban ride comfort. Inside, the cabin adopts a minimalist yet technologically advanced approach, featuring a unique 17.9-inch diamond-shaped central display and a panoramic row of nine customizable smaller screens across the dashboard. While the interior materials and ergonomics reflect BMW’s premium standards, some features like the lack of cooled front seats and sunroof shading may disappoint buyers in hot climates.
On the road, BMW engineers opted against air suspension to reduce weight and cost, resulting in excellent intercity comfort but a firmer ride on rough urban roads, especially with the large sport tires. The iX3’s handling stands out among electric SUVs, with precise steering, controlled body roll, and a dynamic driving experience aided by the advanced HoJ (Heart of Joy) central computer that synchronizes power delivery, braking, and steering. Safety features are comprehensive, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assistance, earning the iX3 a five-star Euro NCAP rating.
BMW continues to sell the gasoline-powered X3 alongside the electric iX3, with prices ranging from 425,000 to 460,000 shekels. The iX3 targets premium European buyers willing to pay a higher price for advanced technology, driving enjoyment, and brand prestige. Overall, the iX3 represents a new type of electric vehicle that balances long-range cruising comfort with engaging driving dynamics, earning a rare 9 out of 10 rating from testers.
