US Software Developer Job Postings Rise 15% Following Launch of Claude Code AI Tool

A new report from Hiring Lab, the research division of the job site Indeed, reveals a notable shift in the US labor market. Since the launch of the AI tool Claude Code in February 2025, software developer job postings in the US have increased by approximately 15%, even as overall job postings across the economy declined by 7% during the same period.

The report highlights that this rebound in software development roles follows a prolonged decline, with current job postings still about 27.5% below pre-COVID-19 levels. Researchers caution that the rise in demand cannot be solely attributed to new AI tools, but the timing of the surge closely aligns with the spread of agentic AI technologies.

A key finding is a reversal in trends for professions highly exposed to AI. Between 2022 and 2026, jobs with greater AI exposure saw sharper declines in postings. However, from May 2025 to May 2026, these same AI-exposed roles led the recovery in job listings. This pattern extends beyond software development to other AI-impacted fields.

The report also notes a shift in employer hiring preferences. About 37% of the growth in software developer postings during the last year included AI in the job title, such as AI Software Engineer or AI Platform Engineer. Moreover, 71% of the increase was in senior-level positions, indicating a strong demand for experienced professionals who can integrate agentic AI tools into development processes.

Researchers suggest this reflects a change in skill requirements rather than the emergence of entirely new job categories. Employers increasingly seek developers capable of working alongside AI tools, signaling a broader transformation in the labor market where AI not only automates tasks but also reshapes the skills in demand.
