IDF Presents Investigation to Family of Fallen Golani Soldier After Delay and Criticism

Nearly 20 months after the death of Staff Sergeant Gur Kahati, a Golani Brigade soldier killed in a South Lebanon incident on November 20, 2024, the Israel Defense Forces presented the operational investigation to his family. The presentation occurred only after the family threatened to petition the High Court of Justice if the report was not delivered by July 10. Kahati's grandfather, Asaf Agmon, expressed deep disappointment with the investigation, stating that their darkest fears were confirmed. He criticized the report for focusing mainly on the broader Golani Brigade operations rather than the specific circumstances of Kahati's death. The family also highlighted that the report indicated no operational necessity for the involvement of civilian Ze'ev (Zhabo) Ehrlich, who was also killed in the incident, and claimed that all actions by retired Colonel Yoav Yerum were unauthorized and lacked proper authority. Agmon condemned the investigation's conclusions for failing to assign responsibility to commanders, describing the lack of accountability as a grave failure. The family had hoped for an explicit admission of fault and command responsibility but received only apologies and praise for Kahati's heroism, which they found insufficient. Kahati's parents had requested the investigation report from the IDF Chief of Staff three months prior, criticizing the prolonged lack of professional, ethical, or humane response to their son's death and demanding immediate access to the information.
