Nova Massacre Survivors Face Coordinated Online Hate Campaign Linked to Iran

Survivors of the October 7 Nova music festival massacre are enduring an unprecedented wave of online harassment, according to a report by the Fight Online Antisemitism (FOA) organization published in the British Telegraph on June 8, 2024. The report reveals that thousands of coordinated fake accounts, primarily linked to hostile actors including Iran, are systematically defaming survivors, denying the events, and sometimes inciting physical harm against them. Despite repeated reports, social media platforms have largely failed to remove this harmful content.

The FOA report describes the attack as a "multi-layered ongoing digital campaign" aimed at erasing, distorting, and justifying the atrocities committed during the massacre. The campaign not only disputes the facts but also directly harasses survivors with racist, sexual slurs and death threats. Various platforms serve as venues for spreading this hatred: X (formerly Twitter) is identified as a hub for viral conspiracy theories, while TikTok is flooded with survivor harassment, antisemitic memes, and videos exploiting popular trends to mock victims.

A particularly troubling aspect highlighted is the spread of conspiracy theories claiming the massacre was staged or that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) shot civilians to justify attacks on Gaza. The report cites examples ranging from outright denial to posts blaming the IDF. Survivors such as Noa Argamani, whose kidnapping photo circulated worldwide, and Romi Gonen, who publicly recounted Hamas captivity abuse, have been targeted with abusive nicknames and hate.

Amri Sassi, a Nova festival producer who lost family and friends in the massacre, described the horrific scenes he witnessed and condemned the denial efforts as deepening his trauma. FOA CEO Tomer Aldubi emphasized that survivors and their families suffer "double harm" from these ongoing harassment campaigns, which exacerbate the original trauma of October 7.

TikTok responded by affirming its strict ban on antisemitism and hate incitement, stating it uses advanced technology and expert teams to identify and remove such content. Other social media platforms mentioned in the report have yet to comment. The Nova massacre remains the deadliest terror attack in Israeli history, with 344 civilians killed, hundreds wounded, 34 security personnel killed, and 44 people kidnapped by Hamas militants to Gaza.
