Apple Sues OpenAI Over Alleged Theft of Trade Secrets by Former Employees

Apple has filed a major lawsuit against OpenAI and two of its employees in a federal court in California, accusing them of stealing confidential information and trade secrets. According to reports, Apple claims OpenAI used current and former Apple employees to obtain internal data related to hardware designs, development processes, and unreleased technologies. The lawsuit alleges that this information was intended to help OpenAI prepare for the development and launch of independent AI devices that could compete with Apple products in the future.

Apple stated it possesses significant evidence that confidential and proprietary information was unlawfully taken and emphasized its commitment to protecting its employees' development and innovation work. OpenAI denied the allegations, with a company spokesperson saying it has no interest in other companies' trade secrets and is focused on building innovative technology for users worldwide.

Among the defendants is Tang Tan, OpenAI's chief hardware officer who previously worked at Apple for 24 years, including as vice president of product design for the iPhone and Apple Watch. The lawsuit claims he transferred confidential information about suppliers and development processes before leaving Apple. Another defendant, Chang Liu, a former Apple electrical engineer, allegedly continued accessing internal systems and confidential files after joining OpenAI.

Apple is requesting the court to order OpenAI and the defendants to preserve evidence, return any confidential information in their possession, and award damages or royalties if unlawful use of trade secrets is proven. This lawsuit marks a significant deterioration in relations between Apple and OpenAI, which had previously collaborated in the AI field but now face legal and competitive conflict.
