South African Footballer Jayden Adams Dies at 25 Weeks After Playing in 2026 World Cup

Jayden Adams, a 25-year-old midfielder for the South African national football team and Mamelodi Sundowns, has died just weeks after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Adams appeared nine times for South Africa and started in the team’s first two matches at the tournament, playing about an hour in the opening 2-0 loss to Mexico and starting again in the 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic before being substituted at halftime. The 2026 World Cup was a major milestone in his brief career, though he faced personal hardship during the tournament when his grandmother, Mariana Adams, passed away at age 72 just before the match against the Czech Republic. The South African Football Association noted that Adams played through his grief and gave his all on the field.
