Jdeideh-Makr Council Head Demands Shin Bet Probe After Assassination Attempt

Suhail Malham, head of the Jdeideh-Makr local council, spoke publicly for the first time since an assassination attempt on him nearly two months ago. Malham was shot at close range outside a wedding hall on May 17, leaving him severely injured and confined to a wheelchair during rehabilitation at Nahariya Medical Center. He described the attack as politically motivated, aimed at seizing control of the council ahead of upcoming elections. Malham said he has requested President Isaac Herzog to involve the Shin Bet security service in the investigation, emphasizing that the case is straightforward and not related to personal, familial, or financial disputes.

Malham recounted the severity of his injuries, including three bullets that struck his legs and a major artery, requiring surgery and ongoing physical therapy. Despite physical pain, his main concern remains the attackers still being at large, posing ongoing threats to him and his family. He expressed fear about returning home without assurance of their capture and stressed the need for security before resuming his duties.

The investigation is ongoing under the Coastal District police, who have arrested and released several suspects, including two brothers. Malham suspects a small local faction attempting to undermine his leadership, noting his strong electoral support. He denied any connection to organized crime or family feuds, framing the attack as a political power struggle within the community. Malham affirmed his determination to recover and continue leading, bolstered by increased public support since the shooting.
