London Mayor Sadiq Khan Visits Nova Exhibition Commemorating Hamas Massacre

More than six weeks after its opening in London, Mayor Sadiq Khan visited the Nova Exhibition on Thursday, which memorializes the Hamas massacre at the Nova Festival on October 7, 2023. During his visit, Khan toured the exhibition, met survivors and bereaved families, and was accompanied by London’s Victims Commissioner Andrea Simon. The exhibition, launched in May and recently extended until July 15 due to high demand, was created by Nova Festival producers in collaboration with survivors and families of the victims. It features personal items collected from the massacre site, survivor testimonies, and footage from the initial hours of the Hamas attack, aiming to preserve the memory of the victims and provide visitors with an unfiltered account of that tragic day.

Prior to London, the exhibition was displayed in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors including public figures and cultural leaders. Organizers emphasized the significance of Khan’s visit, noting his call for the British public to see the exhibition as a powerful message given his status as a senior elected official. Khan’s visit is notable against the backdrop of his vocal criticism of Israeli government policies during the Gaza conflict and his controversial statement in September 2023 describing the situation in Gaza as "genocide," which drew sharp criticism from Jewish and pro-Israel groups in the UK.

Since the October 7 attack, Khan has faced criticism from parts of London’s Jewish community for not taking a strong enough stance against rising antisemitism in the city, despite his repeated condemnations of antisemitism and assertions that it has no place in London. During the exhibition tour, Khan stressed the importance of witnessing the event firsthand, regardless of religious or political affiliation, and described the emotional impact of seeing personal belongings of victims, such as children’s shoes and mobile phones. He compared the Nova massacre to the 2017 Manchester Arena terror attack, highlighting the shared human tragedy and the unifying power of music and joy.

Khan concluded by urging the British public to visit the exhibition before it closes, emphasizing the personal and communal significance of understanding what happened on that day. He promised that meeting survivors or bereaved family members would be a deeply moving experience.
