A new report by UN Watch sharply criticizes UNESCO for publicly mourning seven individuals it labeled as journalists, who were later identified as members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad. According to UN Watch, despite UNESCO's methodology requiring verification from multiple sources and updating information when new evidence emerges, the organization did not amend its statements even after the identities of the deceased were clarified. UN Watch CEO Hillel Neuer sent a letter to UNESCO Director-General Khaled Al-Anani demanding corrections to the records, the establishment of an independent investigation committee, and a review of how these announcements were approved.
The report names the seven individuals as Muhammad Abu Armanah, Anas Al-Sharif, Muhammad Washah, Hamza Al-Duhudwah, Mustafa Thriya, Muhammad Jarrar, and Muhammad Nasser Abu Hweidi. UN Watch claims that Hamas, Islamic Jihad, or the IDF later confirmed these individuals as members or commanders within terrorist organizations. The organization calls on UNESCO to retract the inaccurate statements, condemn Hamas and Islamic Jihad for embedding operatives in media roles, and publish the evidence and methodology used to classify every journalist killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023.
Neuer emphasized that UNESCO has become a conduit for Hamas propaganda by failing to correct these misidentifications, undermining the credibility of the UN and the integrity of genuine journalists risking their lives in conflict zones. He stated, "Freedom of the press depends on truth. UNESCO's mission is to protect journalism, not to whitewash the identities of terrorists. The organization now has an obligation to fix the records, investigate these failures, and restore trust in its work."
