The club initially aimed to secure Rishon Holmes, who recently left Panathinaikos, but Holmes remains hesitant about moving to Israel, prompting Maccabi to accelerate negotiations for Fernando's transfer. It is expected that Fernando will be released from his contract with Partizan, enabling his arrival in Tel Aviv. The plan is for him to lead the frontcourt alongside Roman Sorkin and another center who will serve as the third option in the rotation.

Bruno Fernando, 27 years old and 2.08 meters tall, has a substantial NBA background, having played for Atlanta, Boston, Houston, and Toronto. He moved to Europe for the first time in the 2024/2025 season, signing with Real Madrid. After starting the 2025/2026 season with Real Madrid and averaging 4.4 points and 3.4 rebounds per EuroLeague game, he transferred to Partizan Belgrade, where his stats improved to 8.4 points and 4.4 rebounds per game in the EuroLeague.

Maccabi's pursuit of Fernando reflects their strategic priority to strengthen their roster with a top-tier center to compete effectively in the EuroLeague this season.
