The reigning world champions Argentina faced a tense battle in the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup after falling behind by two goals to Egypt. Despite a strong group stage performance and dominant displays led by Lionel Messi, Argentina found themselves on the brink of a shocking exit in Atlanta. Egypt stunned the crowd by scoring early in the 15th minute, and although Messi missed a penalty shortly after, Egypt doubled their lead early in the second half. After a disallowed Egyptian goal for a foul, a legitimate second goal for Egypt put Argentina under immense pressure.
However, the 39-year-old Messi, widely regarded as the greatest footballer in history, sparked Argentina's comeback. He assisted Romero to reduce the deficit and then scored his eighth goal of the tournament to level the match. In stoppage time, Argentina secured a dramatic 3-2 victory with a decisive header, advancing to the quarterfinals and keeping their hopes alive for a consecutive World Cup title. Argentina will next face the winner of the Colombia versus Switzerland match. Messi’s continued impact raises the possibility of him making further history in the tournament.
