Man Attempts Bank Robbery in Beersheba Using Gas Canister Decoy

A 52-year-old man from Beersheba, Vyacheslav Shmilov, attempted to rob a local bank branch using a unique method involving small gas canisters tied together to resemble an improvised explosive device. The incident occurred several weeks ago when Shmilov entered the bank disguised with a hat, sunglasses, and a medical mask, carrying the gas canisters wrapped in tape and wire inside a bag. He approached a bank employee, lifted the fake device, and demanded money, claiming it was a gas balloon. The employee froze in fear, and when another staff member questioned him, Shmilov repeated his demand.

When asked to wait, Shmilov threatened the employees by lighting a lighter near the gas canisters. During this, a second employee pressed the panic button, alerting security forces. A security guard tried to call the police, but Shmilov noticed and knocked the phone from his hand to prevent the call. Realizing police were en route, Shmilov fled empty-handed.

The Southern District Prosecutor's Office filed charges against Shmilov for attempted robbery and assault at the Beersheba District Court. The investigation was conducted by Beersheba police, and the prosecution requested his detention. The case highlights the unusual and dangerous tactics used in the attempted robbery and the quick response of bank staff and security forces that prevented the theft.
