Man Armed with Gas Canisters Threatens to Blow Up Bank Branch in Beersheba
The Southern District Prosecutor's Office has filed serious charges against Vyacheslav Shmilov, a 52-year-old resident of Beersheba, for attempting to rob a local bank branch. According to the indictment submitted to the Beersheba District Court, Shmilov entered the bank armed with gas canisters fashioned to look like an explosive device. He threatened to detonate the canisters using a lighter and demanded money from the bank employees.
The incident occurred several weeks ago. Shmilov planned the robbery by connecting two gas canisters with tape and wire to simulate a bomb. On the day of the crime, he disguised himself with a hat, sunglasses, and a medical mask, carrying the fake bomb in a bag. He approached a bank clerk, brandished the canisters, and ordered her to hand over the cash. The clerk froze in fear, while another employee confronted Shmilov and asked about his actions.
When the second employee tried to stall, Shmilov lit a lighter and threatened to ignite the gas canisters. During this tense moment, the employees managed to press a silent alarm button, alerting emergency services. A security guard attempted to call the police but was attacked by Shmilov, who knocked the phone from his hand. Realizing the police were en route, Shmilov fled the scene empty-handed and was later arrested.
