Paraguay's Senate unanimously removed President Santiago Peña from office overnight, just a day after he announced his resignation in response to the collapse of a major bank. All 44 senators present voted in favor of the impeachment, which was intended to prevent Peña from receiving legal immunity typically granted to former presidents. Shortly after the vote, an arrest warrant was issued for Peña on suspicion of offenses related to the bank's failure, though he denies the charges.

Vice President Pedro Alliana is expected to succeed Peña. The bank's collapse, which reportedly affected approximately three million customers, led to widespread protests across Paraguay, with demonstrators expressing anger over their inability to access funds. Images from the protests showed effigies of the outgoing president being burned.

This development occurred nearly two years after Peña, during the inauguration of Israel's embassy in Paraguay, announced that Paraguay's embassy would reopen in Jerusalem in December.
