The Amersfoort Museum in the Netherlands is reconsidering its decision to cancel an exhibition celebrating 300 years of Jewish life in the city. The museum will now explore with the municipality and the Jewish community how to proceed with the exhibition, following significant backlash. The original decision had sparked anger and disappointment among the local Jewish community and prompted intervention from Mayor Lucas Bolsius, who expressed his displeasure and met with museum management.

The exhibition was planned for five years in anticipation of the 300th anniversary of the city's synagogue in February. The Amersfoort synagogue, established in 1727, is considered the oldest active Ashkenazi synagogue in Western Europe. The local Jewish community had planned a series of events and a commemorative book to mark this historic milestone.

Museum Director Paul Bultus cited the current situation in the Middle East and rising global tensions as the reason for the initial cancellation. He stated that these developments had given the exhibition a different meaning than originally intended and expressed concern for the safety of the museum's 85 volunteers, fearing they might face hostile reactions. Bultus acknowledged that security measures could be implemented but emphasized his reluctance to put volunteers at risk, while also admitting there was no concrete information about a specific security threat.

The Jewish community in Amersfoort reacted with shock. Community Chairman Alexander van Dijkhuizen criticized the decision as a misguided instinct to ban Jewish events because of Israel. Community board member Yitzhak Elzas called the decision unacceptable, stating the community members do not want the conflict from the Middle East brought to them.

Following the protests, the local council of churches and Mayor Bolsius joined the pressure. The issue was also discussed in the city council, with representatives from the Christian Union and VVD parties urging the mayor and council members to re-examine the possibility of holding the exhibition. A meeting, initiated by the mayor and the city council member responsible for culture, Marolijn Parduck, took place with museum management and its supervisory board. Subsequently, it was agreed that the municipality, museum, and Jewish community would collaborate to explore options for the exhibition. The mayor expressed his satisfaction with the positive intentions shown by all parties, emphasizing the importance of telling the story of 300 years of Jewish culture in Amersfoort as a significant local narrative fitting for the museum.
