Israeli dietitian Dr. Maya Roseman compared the health risks of beer and Coca-Cola, concluding that while neither is healthy, the primary danger in beer is alcohol and in regular cola is sugar. She noted that beer contains some beneficial compounds but alcohol poses significant cancer and health risks. Coca-Cola's main issue is its high sugar content, linked to obesity and diabetes, though diet versions may be preferable. Roseman advised moderation for both drinks, discouraging them as daily staples.

  • Dietitian Maya Roseman stated beer's main danger is alcohol, while regular cola's is sugar.
  • WHO warns no safe alcohol level exists regarding cancer risk.
  • Regular cola contains high sugar, increasing risks of obesity and diabetes.
  • Beer contains some beneficial compounds but alcohol's risks outweigh them.
  • Diet versions of cola may be preferable due to lack of sugar.
  • Both drinks should be consumed in moderation, not as daily staples.

An Israeli dietitian, Dr. Maya Roseman, has compared the health impacts of beer and Coca-Cola, two popular beverages, noting that determining which is less harmful is complex. She emphasized that healthy eating doesn't require complete abstinence from favorite drinks but rather moderation and a balanced diet.

Roseman explained that beer, made from grains and hops, contains beneficial plant compounds like polyphenols with antioxidant properties, as well as small amounts of B vitamins and minerals. While some studies have linked moderate alcohol consumption to lower rates of heart disease and type 2 diabetes, Roseman cautioned that these correlations don't prove causation and that the dangers of alcohol, even in small quantities, are significant. The World Health Organization warns that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption regarding cancer risk, as it increases the likelihood of developing at least seven types of cancer. Alcohol also negatively affects brain function, sleep quality, blood pressure, and liver health, and can lead to dependency.

Regarding post-exercise consumption, Roseman stated that beer is unsuitable for recovery due to alcohol's impact on hydration and muscle repair, suggesting non-alcoholic beer or water as better alternatives. She also addressed the common misconception about beer's benefits after workouts.

Coca-Cola, on the other hand, is primarily composed of water, sugar, carbon dioxide, phosphoric acid, colorings, flavorings, and caffeine, offering little nutritional value. The main concern is its high sugar content, with a 330 ml can containing about 35 grams of sugar (nearly nine teaspoons) and 140 calories. Regular consumption of sugary sodas is linked to increased risks of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dental problems.

Roseman also discussed Coca-Cola Zero, which uses artificial sweeteners like aspartame and acesulfame potassium instead of sugar. While the WHO advises against using low-calorie sweeteners for long-term weight control, they are considered safe within established limits. Roseman suggested that Coca-Cola Zero might be a preferable option to regular cola due to its lack of sugar. However, she noted that the acidity of sodas, including Sprite (which also contains significant sugar), can contribute to tooth enamel erosion and potentially affect bone density, though the latter link is not definitively established.
