The Follow-up Committee for the Affairs of the Arab Citizens in Israel announced on Thursday a broad campaign to counter racist incitement, following a meeting in Baqa al-Gharbiyya. The committee's leadership, including political factions, popular bodies, and NGOs, will participate in the initiative.
Jamal Zahalka, head of the committee, stated that influential Israeli politicians and media outlets are leading the escalating incitement, aiming to target Arab leaders and the Palestinian community within Israel and foster hatred. He emphasized a responsible national stance and collective action as the response, involving various political and societal forces. Zahalka also condemned the political persecution of Arab leaders, citing the arrest of Abd Abu Shehadeh, head of the Islamic Authority in Jaffa, and what he described as an attempt to fabricate charges against MK Ayman Odeh.
The committee plans a series of events, including demonstrations, marches, and statements, to combat racism. They will also hold an urgent meeting with foreign embassy representatives to discuss incitement, crime, and violence in the Arab community. A legal forum with NGOs will be convened to monitor incitement campaigns, pursue legal complaints, and organize further actions.
Regarding land and housing issues, the committee is mobilizing to thwart land confiscation and demolition plans in the Al-Taybeh plain, scheduling a meeting with the Al-Taybeh municipality, popular committees, and farmer committees. In the Negev, the committee reiterated its rejection of government projects involving land confiscation, home demolition, and displacement, calling for continued activism in coordination with Negev bodies, including the Forum of Heads of Local Authorities and the Higher Steering Committee.
The committee also addressed rising crime and violence in the Arab community, urging the activation of reconciliation committees. It will also oppose settlement projects in the Galilee and other areas, which it believes aim to encircle Arab towns and create tension. Finally, the committee called on Arab citizens to visit Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque to support residents and assert Muslims' right to worship freely, condemning expulsion orders against hundreds of Palestinians from Jerusalem and Israel.
