Mel Shemla, a 61-year-old Israeli citizen also holding French and U.S. passports, has been extradited from Germany to Miami to face charges of large-scale fraud. According to the investigation, Shemla led a criminal group that defrauded thousands of Americans, primarily targeting elderly and low-income individuals with promises of easy wealth. Between September 2016 and November 2020, the group sent letters, styled as personal messages from psychics with supernatural abilities, claiming recipients were destined for financial windfalls but required an advance payment to activate the prophecy. Funds were collected through checks cashed via special accounts and transferred to European banks controlled by accomplices. Shemla pleaded not guilty and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. Originally from France, he attended a Jewish school in Paris, speaks Hebrew fluently, and previously served as CEO of Biosmose. The identities of his accomplices and the exact amount of damages are not yet disclosed. Separately, the U.S. Department of Justice is prosecuting a 30-year-old Israeli national residing in Pennsylvania for illegally participating in the 2024 presidential election. Despite having a green card, he is accused of voting without U.S. citizenship, facing up to a year in prison and a fine if found guilty. He is reportedly part of a group of nine foreigners charged with illegal voting in the 2022 and 2024 elections, including citizens of Poland, Russia, Cuba, Greece, Kenya, and the Netherlands.
