Zevulun Simantov, who was known as the last Jew remaining in Afghanistan and personally guarded an ancient synagogue in Kabul, has settled in Ashdod, Israel. He recently received a visit from Rabbi Ovadia Dahan, the Chairman of the Ashdod Religious Council, who affixed a mezuzah to his new home.
Simantov lived for many years in Kabul, choosing to remain behind to safeguard the city's ancient synagogue even as his family and the rest of the Jewish community departed due to the deteriorating security situation. Following the Taliban's takeover and increasing risks to his life, Simantov was evacuated in late 2021 through a special operation, passing through the United States and Turkey. He made aliyah (immigrated to Israel) in November 2024 and is now residing in a hostel for new immigrants in Ashdod, where he is facing challenges with integration and learning Hebrew.
Simantov had recently contacted Rabbi Dahan, requesting that he come to affix a mezuzah to his apartment door. Rabbi Dahan fulfilled the request, visiting Simantov at the hostel. During the ceremony, the Rabbi attached the mezuzah, and Simantov recited the blessing for its placement while holding a prayer book. Rabbi Dahan presented Simantov with a calendar of Shabbat times and a book of Psalms, wishing him good health and successful integration into Israel. Simantov expressed gratitude to Rabbi Dahan for his visit and for the support he has received since his arrival.
