Israeli authorities demolished about half of the structures in the Palestinian Bedouin hamlet of Bir al-Maskub east of Jerusalem on November 3, 2026, displacing 20 residents. NGOs "Bimkom," "Ir Amim," and "Peace Now" report this is the first demolition in the E1 settlement zone since plans were revived, signaling a move toward implementation. The demolitions occurred despite ongoing legal challenges to the E1 plans, which aim to build over 3,400 settlement units and could fragment the West Bank.

Israeli authorities demolished approximately half of the structures in the Palestinian Bedouin hamlet of Bir al-Maskub, located within the E1 settlement zone east of Jerusalem, on November 3, 2026. This marks the first known demolition targeting Bedouin communities in the E1 area since settlement plans were recently revived, signaling a shift from planning to actual implementation on the ground, according to the NGOs "Bimkom, Planners for Human Rights," "Ir Amim," and "Peace Now." The demolitions affected about four residential complexes, including homes, kitchens, and sanitation facilities, displacing around 20 Palestinians. Simultaneously, Israeli authorities renewed demolition orders from 2008 against all remaining buildings in the hamlet, threatening its complete removal. The NGOs warn that these actions could extend to other Bedouin communities in the E1 area, home to hundreds of Palestinians.

Mayor of the Ma'ale Adumim settlement, Guy Yifrah, acknowledged on Facebook that the demolitions were initiated by the municipality, which had urged the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories to demolish the structures. The targeted buildings are located more than a kilometer from the nearest settlement homes, which the NGOs interpret as evidence that the demolition's purpose is not related to local planning needs but rather to clear the area for a new settlement. These demolitions proceeded despite ongoing legal challenges against the E1 plans before Israeli courts.

The E1 plans involve constructing 3,401 settlement units between Jerusalem and Ma'ale Adumim, a move that threatens to sever the West Bank and undermine the viability of a future Palestinian state. In response to a petition filed by the three NGOs and several Palestinian residents, Israeli authorities stated that the nomadic lifestyle of Bedouin communities, involving livestock herding over large areas, should not impede planning, even without resolved legal statuses for construction and ownership. The NGOs view this stance as reflecting the authorities' perception of Palestinian presence as an obstacle to settlement expansion, rather than recognizing and protecting residents' rights.

The three NGOs issued a joint statement asserting that "Israel has moved from planning settlements to actual displacement." They described the demolition of nearly half of Bir al-Maskub's structures and the renewal of demolition orders for the remainder as the beginning of an effort to erase an entire Palestinian community. The E1 plans, they stated, not only entail building thousands of settlement units but also uprooting Palestinian communities to make way for new settlements, with potential expansion to other communities housing hundreds of Palestinians. These actions raise serious concerns about the forced transfer of protected Palestinian residents, constituting a violation of international humanitarian law.
