Haredi Officer Cadets Complete Training, Aim to Integrate Religious Life with IDF Service

The first group of officer cadets from the Haredi-focused "Hashmonaim" Brigade completed their officer course and received their squad leader pins yesterday. In the coming days, they will begin final training stages, after which they will become the first officers of this unique religious brigade within the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

One notable graduate is A., a 26-year-old from Beit Shemesh who studied rabbinical studies for years before enlisting. He described the brigade's establishment as the opportunity he had been waiting for to serve in the army without compromising his Haredi lifestyle. After enlisting in the first cohort, completing the squad leader course, and commanding at a training base, he decided to pursue officer training to help shape future generations of Haredi soldiers.

A. enlisted about six months after his marriage, with his wife supporting his decision despite uncertainties about their life during combat service. He acknowledged some community resistance but emphasized their shared sense of duty to contribute to the country. He described the officer course as highly demanding, with no special concessions and standards equal to any other IDF officer training.

Reflecting on the experience, A. highlighted solitary navigation exercises as moments for introspection about his journey, family, and sense of mission. Looking ahead, he aspires to be a commander who leads by example, balances demanding standards with listening, and demonstrates that a Haredi lifestyle can coexist with meaningful military service. He believes this is just the beginning of the brigade's development.
