Haredi Youth Explore Military Service Options While Maintaining Religious Identity
Amid ongoing controversy over Israel's military conscription laws, dozens of Haredi young men gathered in the settlement of Bat Hadar near Ashkelon to explore tailored service tracks within the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). These youths, graduates of pre-military preparatory programs, aim to integrate into combat and command roles without compromising their Haredi identity. The preparatory frameworks address issues of religious observance, faith, and the social challenges of joining the military, offering a support system that includes kosher food, prayer, and Torah study.
During the open day event, participants met representatives from various military service tracks and learned about units adapted for Haredi soldiers. This initiative coincides with heated debates in the Knesset regarding the Basic Law on Torah Study and efforts to halt the detention of yeshiva students. Leaders of the preparatory programs and Hesder yeshivas recently sent a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, urging a one-year freeze on arrests of Torah learners, warning that the current wave of detentions is causing deep distress and alienation within the Haredi community.
Over the past decade, eight Haredi preparatory programs have been established, with 173 graduates in the latest cohort preparing for military service. More than 70% are expected to serve in combat roles, and over 40% in command positions. Although these numbers represent a small fraction of the broader Haredi population, the participants are determined to demonstrate that it is possible to serve in the IDF while preserving their religious identity. This effort seeks to offer a gradual, peaceful alternative that bridges Torah study, Haredi identity, and national service amid fears of societal division.
