IDF Hosts Dozens of Haredi Youths to Showcase Combat Service Opportunities

Around 120 Haredi youths, mostly yeshiva students, visited the IDF's Hachshmonaim Brigade base for a special exposure day during the "Bein Hazmanim" break. The event aimed to introduce them to a unique service track that integrates traditional Haredi lifestyle with meaningful combat roles. Participants observed hostage rescue drills, handled weaponry, and engaged with brigade fighters and commanders.

The IDF emphasized that the accommodations made for religious observance do not compromise operational standards. Fighters in the brigade undergo full infantry training and professional courses, having already operated in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and the West Bank. Many visitors also heard personal stories from soldiers, some of whom had no prior military background, highlighting the emotional and social complexities surrounding Haredi enlistment.

Some attendees arrived out of curiosity but left seriously considering enlistment, while others faced opposition from their communities or received parental support, illustrating the nuanced challenges of military service in the Haredi sector. Recruitment data shows a rising trend: from 57 soldiers in the brigade's first cohort in early 2025 to 97 in the latest cycle. Overall, Haredi enlistment in the IDF increased from about 1,700 in 2022 to over 4,000 in 2025, including roughly 1,000 in combat roles, though full service completion rates remain unclear.

The Hachshmonaim Brigade clarified that their goal is not to persuade those committed to Torah study to enlist but to provide a suitable framework for those who have already decided to serve. As the debate over Haredi conscription continues to dominate Israeli public and political discourse, this exposure day may mark a pivotal first step for these young men toward changing their lives.
