Black Christian Leaders Visit Israel to Fulfill Martin Luther King's Unfinished Dream

Approximately 500 Black Christian pastors and leaders from America and Africa are visiting Israel this week for a pilgrimage inspired by a nearly 60-year-old, unfulfilled project of Martin Luther King Jr. The initiative, called "Unfinished Business Pilgrimage," aims to strengthen ties between Black Christian communities and Israel, particularly amid declining support for Israel in the United States and rising antisemitism.

In 1967, Martin Luther King Jr. had planned a pilgrimage to Israel and Jordan for thousands of participants. The trip was postponed due to the Six-Day War and its political ramifications. King had considered realizing the project the following year, but his assassination in April 1968 halted the initiative permanently. Organizers now intend to carry forward this legacy, announcing plans for a larger gathering of thousands in 2027 to mark the 60th anniversary of the originally planned trip.

"We felt a profound responsibility," stated pastor Dumisani Washington, a pro-Israel activist, during a press conference in Jerusalem. He cited the rise of antisemitism from both the left and the right as a motivating factor. Pastor Michael A. Stevens highlighted the growing support for Israel among African American churches, asserting, "If there are people who should stand with our Jewish brothers and sisters, it is African Americans and Africans," referencing the historical solidarity between Jewish and Black communities in the U.S.

During their visit, the group will tour biblical sites and the location of the Hamas massacre at the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023. In Jerusalem, delegation leaders presented gifts to Israelis affected by terrorism, including former hostage Elkana Bohbot, Hila the murder victim, whose brother Lotan was killed at the Nova festival, and Daniel Lischinsky, father of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, who were murdered at an Israeli diplomatic event in Washington.

While aiming to combat antisemitism and bolster support for Israel, the organizers also urged Israel to better address the concerns of Black American communities. Pastor Stevens specifically mentioned the human toll in Gaza and discrimination issues faced by Israelis of Ethiopian descent. He emphasized that the rapprochement between Israel and African American churches must be built on deep dialogue and mutual understanding, extending beyond mere expressions of solidarity.
