The head of the Shin Bet, David Zini, is reportedly furious with the Attorney General and the Shin Bet's own legal counsel for allegedly delaying an investigation into suspected foreign interference in the recent elections. Zini claims that hostile foreign entities funneled up to 100 million shekels to influence the vote, yet no suspect has been approved for investigation. He described receiving "a small, deadly, smoking gun of evidence" shortly before the elections, with reports on election day of money and fuel cards being offered to voters.

In a conversation with the Chairman of the Central Elections Committee, Judge Noam Sohlberg, Zini detailed the gravity of the suspicions. He stated that funds were transferred from hostile countries, allegedly through the Palestinian Authority, to influence voting for specific Arab parties, though these are currently allegations under investigation. Zini expressed frustration, noting the widespread nature of the alleged interference, the security implications, and the involvement of suspects also linked to terrorism.

The core of the dispute lies in the evidentiary threshold required for initiating investigations. The Shin Bet argues that intelligence information is sufficient, while the Attorney General's office insists on a stronger evidentiary basis, especially when dealing with public officials and extraordinary investigative measures. Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara stated that "anyone who needs to be investigated will be investigated, but people will not be investigated without an evidentiary basis."

Zini also explained the timing of his election day statement, which affirmed the voting process was proceeding normally. He clarified that initial intelligence emerged close to the election, followed by corroborating reports on election day itself detailing the vote-buying schemes. Despite the controversy, Zini reportedly intends to proceed only with legally approved investigative actions.

Adding to the friction, Baharav-Miara accused the Shin Bet of withholding investigation materials for two days, delaying the process. The Shin Bet responded that all its actions are lawful and declined to comment on covert operational methods. Judge Sohlberg has also emphasized that while suspicions exist, solid evidence is required to question the election results themselves.
