The IDF revealed that on the night before October 7, intelligence indicated Hamas's preparations for an attack, including unusual movements by commander Mohammed Deif and observed rocket launcher activity. Despite these signs, the IDF did not conclude war was imminent, with the Southern Command commander assessing routine activity. Former IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi stated he could explain the events and dismissed theories of internal betrayal, noting no evidence of a wide network assisting Hamas. New footage also emerged showing Deif planning the attack with other Hamas officials.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) revealed on Wednesday that additional indications of Hamas's preparations for an attack on Israel were received on the night between October 6 and 7. During that night, according to security establishment information, Mohammed Deif, commander of Hamas's military wing, left his home and entered an underground route on his way to the organization's command center. In response, the IDF scrambled an additional intelligence drone from Judea and Samaria to the Gaza Strip. Deif's unusual movements prompted the Shin Bet to dispatch the "Tequila" special unit southward to employ advanced capabilities, unrelated to a scenario of terrorist infiltration.

Another suspicious sign observed was a Hamas launch operative, identified live by an IDF drone, removing a tarp from a rocket launcher in the central Gaza Strip. Despite these and other preceding signs, including the activation of warning systems, the IDF did not conclude that Hamas was preparing for war. Following an initial assessment at the Southern Command around 3:00 AM, Southern Command Commander Yaron Finkelman determined that "the Nukhba [Hamas elite forces] are in routine, no immediate event is identified."

Earlier this week, former IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi addressed the events of October 7 and the 'betrayal' theory surrounding them. He stated, "I can explain how October 7 happened down to the smallest details. I also know the people, and I do not believe that any of my colleagues, after decades of service in which they risked their lives, would one day decide to help Hamas. Practically speaking, helping Hamas would require a very wide network, not just one person. To date, not a single such person has been found."

Days prior, Al Jazeera published new footage of Deif from the evening before October 7, showing him planning the massacre alongside Raffah Salameh, commander of Hamas's Khan Yunis brigade, Mohammed Odeh, head of the organization's intelligence division, and Hudhayfah Kahlat (Abu Ubaidah), spokesman for the military wing.
