Israeli military intelligence received a significant indication on the night of October 6-7, 2023, that Hamas commander Mohammed Deif had disappeared from radar and was not being tracked by security forces. It was later revealed that Deif had activated an emergency safe house and was staying there that same night. The IDF claims it was not certain the identified figure entering the safe house was Deif, and therefore did not launch an attack. The information reached the then-commander of the Southern Command, Major General Yaron Finkelman. At 3:00 AM, following a discussion, Finkelman concluded, "The Nukhba are in routine, this is not yet a move to war." The Nukhba refers to Hamas's elite commando unit.
