Israeli Neuroscientists Propose Consciousness Originates in Ancient Brain Stem

Neurobiologists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem hypothesize that consciousness originates in the ancient brain stem, not the cerebral cortex. Their theory suggests the brain stem computes the subjective experience of self, while the cortex processes information. This is supported by observations that brain stem damage leads to coma, while cortical damage often preserves consciousness. The researchers propose testing their hypothesis on the mesopontine tegmentum.

  • Their hypothesis is published in The Neuroscientist journal.
  • Pain perception is cited as evidence, as it persists despite cortical damage.
  • Brain stem damage consistently leads to coma, unlike cortical damage.
  • The cortex is seen as processing information fed to the brain stem for conscious awareness.

Neurobiologists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have proposed a new hypothesis suggesting that the fundamental sense of self, the core of consciousness, originates not in the cerebral cortex but in the ancient brain stem. Their theoretical work, published in the journal The Neuroscientist, synthesizes experimental and clinical data, though it is presented as a hypothesis rather than a proven mechanism.

The researchers point to the experience of pain as a key indicator. While extensive damage to the cortex can impair senses like vision and hearing, pain perception often remains or even intensifies. Conversely, damage to specific areas of the brain stem consistently leads to coma, whereas cortical damage rarely causes a loss of consciousness. This suggests the brain stem plays a more critical role in maintaining awareness.

According to the hypothesis, the raw, subjective experience of being, the "I within," is computed by neural circuits in the brain stem. The cortex, in this model, functions more like an advanced processing unit, handling complex tasks such as facial recognition, language comprehension, and risk assessment. It then feeds this information to the brain stem, which determines what enters conscious awareness. This explains why cortical damage can lead to loss of specific abilities without eliminating consciousness itself.

The theory also offers an evolutionary perspective. The ability to feel pain, a crucial survival mechanism, likely evolved in ancient brain structures as an extension of basic reflexes. When the cortex developed, evolution may have adapted the existing brain stem mechanism for consciousness rather than creating an entirely new system. The researchers suggest that the mesopontine tegmentum, a brain stem region linked to coma and anesthesia, could be a focal point for testing this hypothesis.
