A young soccer player, Jesus de Miguel, died from Commotio Cordis after a blow to the chest during a game. Dr. Shirit Kazoom-Beizer explained this rare condition, triggered by a precise impact timing causing cardiac arrest. Immediate CPR and defibrillator use are crucial for survival, with improved outcomes due to increased awareness and device availability. While rare, underlying heart conditions are a more common cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes.

A young soccer player, Jesus de Miguel, tragically died after suffering a blow to the chest during a match, leading to cardiac arrest. Dr. Shirit Kazoom-Beizer, Director of the Sports Cardiology Service at Bnei Zion Medical Center, part of the Clalit Group, explained the rare phenomenon known as Commotio Cordis, or heart commotion. This condition occurs when a blunt impact to the chest happens during a critical 20-millisecond window in the heart's electrical cycle, causing ventricular fibrillation and immediate collapse, even in a healthy heart.

Kazoom-Beizer emphasized that while athletes frequently sustain chest impacts from balls, elbows, or knees, Commotio Cordis is extremely rare, with millions of such impacts occurring annually without consequence. The condition primarily affects adolescent males due to their flexible chest walls and is more common in sports involving balls or direct contact. The timing of the blow, not necessarily its force, is the crucial factor.

In cases of collapse where an athlete is unresponsive or not breathing normally, immediate CPR should be initiated. The protocol includes requesting a defibrillator and calling emergency services. Prompt use of a defibrillator, which provides voice guidance and determines the need for an electrical shock, has significantly improved survival rates from previously one in ten to over fifty percent.

While Commotio Cordis is a cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes, it accounts for a small fraction of such incidents. The majority of sudden deaths in young athletes stem from underlying, often silent, heart conditions like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, conduction disorders, myocarditis, or coronary artery anomalies, many of which can be detected through annual screening tests. Regular check-ups and basic CPR knowledge are vital for athlete safety, akin to a seatbelt, offering crucial protection when needed.
