US Midterm Election Results Boost Israeli Renewable Energy Stocks

Israeli renewable energy stocks saw a significant surge following the Democratic Party's success in the US midterm elections, securing a majority in the House of Representatives and a narrow win in the Senate. The Tel Aviv Cleantech Index, which tracks publicly traded renewable energy companies, experienced a notable rise. This positive market reaction is attributed to the Democrats' traditionally more favorable stance towards renewable energy, contrasting with the previous Republican-controlled Congress that had reduced tax benefits for the sector.

Enlight, a major Israeli company operating extensively in the US market and listed on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, jumped over 7%. This follows a strong third-quarter report and is seen as a significant regulatory relief, potentially easing the advancement of its substantial project pipeline abroad. Doral, another renewable energy firm recently added to the Tel Aviv 35 index, also saw a similar increase, partly due to its "Indiana South" project connecting to the electricity grid. This solar complex is noted as one of the largest globally and the biggest in the Western world.

Analysts suggest that while President Trump's veto power until the end of 2028 may block dramatic Democratic legislative initiatives, the shift in Congress reduces the likelihood of further cuts to existing benefits and increases oversight on Treasury Department regulations. Lior Weider, an analyst at "Makhpil Rofach," stated that the election results provide immediate significant tailwinds for the renewable energy sector, particularly for companies like Enlight. He added that the market had been pricing in the risk of further adverse regulatory changes, a risk that has now diminished.

Roy Shavit, an energy analyst at IBI, expressed a more cautious view, noting that the Democratic control would not reinstate tax benefits canceled in 2025 due to the President's veto power. However, he acknowledged that the regulatory environment for renewable energy in the US is likely to stop worsening, even if it doesn't revert to previous conditions. Shavit also pointed to the potential impact on data center construction, a key demand driver for the sector, if Democrats prioritize reducing electricity costs. Additionally, a broader macroeconomic factor contributing to the stock surge is the decline in US Treasury bond yields, which benefits growth companies reliant on external financing.
