A new sports center, featuring East Jerusalem's first public swimming pool, has opened in the Beit Hanina neighborhood. The facility, named after Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel, represents an investment of approximately $20 million. Previously, residents of East Jerusalem, a densely populated area, had to travel to other parts of the city or forgo swimming facilities.

The center spans about 5,000 square meters and includes a covered swimming pool, a toddler pool, a learn-to-swim pool, gym facilities, studio rooms, and public spaces. It is designed for all age groups and will offer classes, training, and community activities.

The project was a collaboration between the Jerusalem Municipality, the Ministry for Jerusalem and Tradition, and the Jerusalem Foundation, with support from the Mandel Foundation, Mifal HaPayis (the national lottery), and other donors. Mifal HaPayis alone contributed over 31 million shekels.

In addition to serving the community, the center is expected to create dozens of jobs for local residents, including instructors, coaches, lifeguards, and maintenance staff. Shimon Alboim, Director General of the Ministry for Jerusalem and Tradition, stated that the project is part of a government five-year plan for East Jerusalem aimed at improving quality of life and fostering local economic development. Recent years have seen other public projects in East Jerusalem, such as an educational complex in Shuafat, a 30-dunam park in Sheikh Jarrah with sports facilities, and a community center in Wadi al-Joz.
