The Chairman of the Election Committee, Judge Noam Sohlberg, has authorized the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) to employ exceptional technological and surveillance capabilities in its investigation into suspected foreign interference in elections. This decision was made despite opposition from Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara.

Shin Bet chief David Zini had insisted to Sohlberg that the suspicions should be classified as security offenses, not criminal ones, due to the involvement of foreign states. Zini presented materials to Sohlberg that led to the approval of these special measures.

However, Attorney General Baharav-Miara had previously objected to the request, stating it was "illegal" and lacked supporting evidence. She expressed concern about using such technologies on Israeli citizens, even if they received money, emphasizing the need for caution. Nevertheless, Sohlberg granted the authorization based on the information provided by Zini.

The Shin Bet has reportedly already implemented these special measures. The agency has declined to specify against whom these capabilities were used or the exact methods employed, citing the classified nature of their operational tools and techniques. The Attorney General's office stated that investigative actions are proceeding lawfully and that claims of obstruction are false.
