Israel's Supreme Court has decided to delay the prison sentence for a young Jewish man convicted in the 2018 death of Aisha al-Rabi. The man was found guilty of throwing a rock at a Palestinian vehicle carrying al-Rabi and her family. The court's decision comes after the man appealed his conviction and sentence.

In September, a district court sentenced the man to 13 years in prison. The three-judge panel was divided, with two judges voting to convict and one dissenting, acquitting him due to reasonable doubt. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Ronen, who heard the appeal request, explained that sending the man to prison before the appeal could result in him serving time "in vain" if he is eventually acquitted. She noted that his conviction was based on circumstantial evidence and that a dissenting judge believed the evidence was insufficient.

Ronen also cited the passage of time since the incident, during which the man remained free and committed no other offenses. She further pointed out that he has no prior criminal record and was a minor at the time of the offense.

The man's lawyers from the Honenu organization welcomed the decision, calling it "precedent-setting" and expressing confidence that it paves the way for his full acquittal. They hope the Supreme Court will adopt the dissenting opinion from the lower court and allow him to begin his life after an eight-year struggle.
