Dutch singer Lenny Kuhr, a co-winner of the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest, made aliyah to Israel on Monday with her husband, Robert. Upon their arrival at Ben Gurion Airport, they were welcomed by representatives from the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration, who will assist them with their initial settlement procedures.

At 76 years old, Kuhr stated her primary motivation for moving is to be closer to her children and grandchildren already living in Israel. However, she also cited a deteriorating climate for Jews in the Netherlands and pressures she has faced during her recent career. "The situation in Europe is difficult. As a singer, I am experiencing show cancellations and have even received death threats," Kuhr said upon arrival. "I want to live in a country that I love. I look forward to improving my Hebrew, living here with my husband, and being near my daughter."

Kuhr had announced her retirement from the stage earlier this year, denouncing the antisemitic harassment she reported experiencing. In March 2024, pro-Palestinian activists disrupted one of her concerts in Waalwijk, Netherlands, with verbal abuse. In May 2026, a Dutch retirement home canceled a scheduled performance as part of her farewell tour, citing fears of protests, a decision that drew criticism from community representatives who viewed it as succumbing to intimidation.

Lenny Kuhr, who converted to Judaism in the 1970s, has long-standing ties to Israel. Her family has also been directly impacted by the ongoing conflict, with one of her grandsons being injured while serving in the IDF in Gaza. Deganit Sankar-Lange, Director General of the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration, welcomed Kuhr, stating, "After years of moving audiences on stage, she is now starting a new chapter here, close to her family," and assured the couple of the ministry's support.

Mikaël Benfredj, an entrepreneur and author, is also mentioned in the article.
