Israel is experiencing a rise in "quiet deaths," where individuals die alone and are discovered only after significant decomposition. In 2025, 213 such cases were reported across the country. ZAKA volunteers are responding to more calls and urge neighbors to be vigilant, especially towards the elderly. The organization also assists with the recovery of remains and, in some cases, arranges funerals for those without family.

A report in the Israeli newspaper "Maariv" highlights a disturbing trend of "quiet deaths" across Israel, where individuals die alone in their homes and are only discovered after their bodies have significantly decomposed. Volunteers from the ZAKA organization, which handles the recovery of victims of terror attacks and disasters, are increasingly responding to calls involving such cases. In 2025, 213 such individuals were found in Israel, their deaths unnoticed for extended periods.

ZAKA reports a noticeable increase in these incidents in southern Israel, specifically in Ashkelon, Ashdod, and Beersheba, though the phenomenon is widespread. Recent weeks have seen three such cases in Bat Yam and Holon. ZAKA volunteers are urging the public to be more aware of their neighbors, particularly the elderly and those living alone. Signs can include accumulating mail and delivery packages, or a cessation of communication in building chat groups.

ZAKA volunteers assist forensic investigators in determining the circumstances of death and collect all bodily remains and related materials for burial. In cases where the deceased has no next of kin, ZAKA sometimes organizes funerals and provides other assistance. For example, the organization arranged a dignified funeral with a minyan for a 60-year-old man in Ashkelon who had no known relatives, even after enlisting Interpol's help to find his family.
