Sewage Flush in Rishon Lezion After Fuel Spill Identified as Odor Source

Residents of Rishon Lezion experienced two days of severe odor pollution before authorities identified a manhole containing fuel and significant signs of its presence as the likely source. The Nature and Parks Authority collected samples from the site. The city's mayor described the incident as a serious sanitary hazard caused by fuel and oil waste dumped into a distant sewage manhole in the city's west. To prevent recurrence, the municipality announced it would flush all sewage lines in the affected area, warning that this process might temporarily cause odors in some parts of the city.

The Rishon Lezion police are investigating the incident, reviewing area surveillance cameras. "We will not rest until whoever is responsible for this serious act pays," police stated. The Ministry of Environmental Protection confirmed its ongoing collaboration with all relevant parties to examine findings and take necessary actions, including further tests to rule out other or additional sources. The ministry's Green Police have joined the investigation.

Experts warn that exposure to chemical odors, even at low concentrations, can have negative health effects. Professor Hagai Levin, Chairman of the Public Health Physicians Association, explained that odor pollution can range from minor discomfort to significant symptoms and severe illness. He noted that while much is still unknown, the substances could be toxic. "Bad odor evokes a strong sense of danger," Levin said, adding that it can trigger physiological responses like increased blood pressure, anxiety, and has been linked to miscarriages, asthma exacerbation, and cardiovascular risks. He emphasized the incident highlights Israel's lack of preparedness for identifying and quickly addressing environmental crime, urging the apprehension of those responsible.

The environmental response involves local authorities, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Ministry of Health, and the municipal water corporation. Environmental organizations stressed that identifying the source should only be the beginning of a thorough investigation into how hazardous materials entered the city's sewage system. They questioned the delay in identifying the source despite numerous resident complaints and called for improved environmental monitoring and enforcement, a task they believe falls to the next government.
