The United States has recorded its first bird flu death in a year, a Washington state resident who contracted H5N1 from infected cattle. The virus has also been detected in 33 dairy herds, with three human cases linked to farm exposures. While the CDC confirms no human-to-human transmission and a low public risk, it advises precautions for those handling birds. This is the third U.S. death linked to bird flu since 2022.

  • A Washington state resident has died from H5N1 bird flu after exposure to infected cattle.
  • The virus has been detected in 33 dairy cattle herds across the U.S.
  • Three human infections have been linked to cattle farm exposures.
  • This is the third reported death from bird flu in the U.S. since 2022.
  • The CDC states the risk to the general public remains low.

The United States has reported its first bird flu-related death in a year, according to the Associated Press. A resident of Washington state died from complications of the H5N1 virus after exposure to infected cattle on a dairy farm in Yakima County. Health officials stated the individual had pre-existing conditions and passed away on Sunday after being hospitalized post-exposure. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed the H5N1 strain was involved.

Authorities in Yakima County have recently detected the virus in 33 dairy cattle herds. Three human infections have been linked to farm exposures. Local and state health departments are actively tracing close contacts of those infected to monitor for symptoms. This marks the third death associated with bird flu in the U.S. since the disease gained prominence two years ago, with previous fatalities reported in Louisiana and Washington state in January and February of last year, respectively.

The H5N1 virus has been spreading among wild birds, poultry, cattle, and other animals for several years. Concerns heightened in early 2024 as infections spread among U.S. livestock. Officials cited by AP noted that increased environmental prevalence of the virus raises the likelihood of human exposure and infection.

Despite these developments, the CDC emphasizes that the risk to the general public remains low and there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission. Genetic sequencing of the virus found in the deceased Washington resident showed no mutations that would suggest easier spread or increased severity. The CDC spokesperson stated this on Monday.

Authorities are advising individuals who come into contact with sick or deceased birds to take precautions, including wearing respiratory protection, eye protection, and gloves. Farm workers are considered at higher risk of infection. The article also briefly mentions H5N1 cases detected in Israel this year, including in a breeding duck flock in the Jezreel Valley, leading to quarantine measures and restrictions on poultry movement.
